Richard "Dick" Vencill Obituary

Richard “Dick” Hamilton Vencill, an 80 year old Galt, MO resident passed away on May 16, 2020 at his home by his wife’s side while under hospice care.

Scheduled visitation will be held on Saturday, May 23 from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM at the Galt Christian Church, followed by graveside services and military rites in the Galt West Cemetery at 2:00 PM. Arrangements are under the direction of Slater-Neal Funeral Home, 813 Custer,Trenton, MO 64683.

Mr. Vencill was born on January 19, 1940 in Galt, MO the son of Richard Sydney and Dorine Elaine (Hamilton) Vencill. As a baby they moved to Lawndale, California where his parents were employed with McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft. He graduated from Leuzinger High School and attended college at El Camino College in Gardena, CA. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a sheet metal mechanic in Vietnam, Thailand, and Okinawa. While in Okinawa he met his soul mate, Akiko Sakuma. They were married in Okinawa, Japan on January 10, 1966. They lived in Redondo Beach, California where he worked as a master layout mechanic for Rockwell International. While at Rockwell he served as a UAW coordinator. He also worked part-time as a journeyman meat cutter at Safeway. In 1976 they moved to Galt, MO where they purchased the Galt Locker and in 1983 incorporated the grocery store.  Dick served two terms on the city board and served as a volunteer with the Galt Fire Department for many years. Dick and Akiko owned and operated the Vencill’s Galt Locker, Grocery, and Liquor until retiring in 2003.

Survivors include wife, Akiko Vencill of the home; daughter, Vickie Booth and her husband, Bryan of Las Vegas, NV; son, Richard Vencill of O’Fallon, MO; grandchildren, Brooke Booth, Bryce Booth, and Jackson Vencill; brother, Ronald Vencill and his wife, Laura of Covina, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Galt Christian Church and/or Galt West Cemetery.
