Fred James Burress, Jr, 75, of Trenton, Missouri, passed peacefully surrounded by family on December 31, 2024.
Fred was born October 19, 1949, to Fred and Ruth (Henderson) Burress. He attended Laredo and Galt schools, graduating from Grundy R5 High School in 1967.
Family visitation will be held Saturday, January 4, 2024, at Resthaven Mortuary of Trenton, from 10:00am. to 12:00pm.
Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, can be made to the Laredo Fire Protection District, 203 Main St, Laredo, MO 64652.
Fred could be found on the farm in his early years as a boy and young father, raising crops and livestock. While he was learning, he was teaching his sons and daughter as well. Valuable lessons in the field of perseverance and sheer passion to complete the job were some of the lessons Fred demonstrated to his family. Other lessons included learning to drive the tractor in the rain, finishing your chores before you could do anything else, holding the flashlight just right, and fixing everything you can. Fred was not afraid of hard work and instilled a work ethic to all that observed him.
Fred loved his horses and horse shows. He was an avid rider himself and shared that passion with his children. Fred’s specialties included barrels, poles and team races. Fred shared his drive for his horses to be in physical shape by making sure his children rode them every single day and practicing horse events. He drove that home so much that he could not figure out why his cattle were so thin, until the kids told him they were practicing by roping the cattle. Fred made sure you got on the horse when it fell, you were bucked off or too scared to get back on, never backing down from a challenge. Fred, Andy, Michelle and Reggie have shared many fond memories of riding horses every weekend.
Following farming, Fred joined the world of trucking, first locally and then interstate, meeting some of his dearest friends. It was on a military base he met his wife, Lucretia, and the two not only became partners in driving, but married on October 21, 2000. They traveled across the United States many times, owning several trucks that spanned more than 700k miles, one truck even gaining 1 million miles. Their trips were top secret, so when time came to talk to him and see where he was, he would respond “Oh, just out driving around”. Upon retirement, Lucretia and Fred made their permanent home in Trenton. Fred enjoyed his longhorn cattle, hand feeding them ears of corn.
Fred was a member of the Lion’s Club, Laredo Rural Fire Department and Ambulance, and the Wrangler 65 Saddle Club.
Fred is survived by his wife of the home Lucretia, sister Susan Plumb (Darrel), Trenton, daughter, Michelle Lynch, Trenton, son Andy Burress (Shelly), Trenton, son Reggie Burress (Stacy), Platte City, step-children, Loretta Hanson, Washington, Loren Hanson (Sarah), Oregon, Wendy Broberg, Kansas City; grandchildren Brittany Shockley (David), Sidney Lynch, Chandler Lynch, Kenzie Lynch, Rahel Horner, Haven Burress, Sarah Elliott, Samantha Peck, Shelby Walker, Cassie Lamp (Corey), Elliott Marston, Adam Marston, Elizabeth Marston; great grandchildren, Baker Shockley, Avery Lamp, Morgan Lamp, Atticus Lamp.
