Don Craig Sager, a 69-year-old Trenton resident, passed away on May 5, 2025, at his home. He was born on August 22, 1955, in Corydon, Iowa, to Norman and Betty Watson Sager.
He is to be cremated under the direction of Slater-Neal Funeral Home with memorial services held on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at 7:00 P.M. at Resthaven Mortuary in Trenton, Missouri.
Family visitation will be held Saturday, May 10, 2025 from 6:30 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the mortuary.
Don graduated from Trenton High School in 1973 while at the same time earning a certificate in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning from Chillicothe Vo-Tech School, now known as Grand River Technical School. He received an AA degree from Trenton Junior College, known now as North Central Missouri College, in 1975. He then earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Arts from Northeast Missouri State University, known as Truman State University, in Kirksville, Missouri, in 1977.
On April 8, 1979, Don was united in marriage to Karen Elaine Johnson at First Christian Church in Trenton. Throughout his life Don was dedicated to a variety of meaningful professions and public service. He taught Industrial Arts in Mercer, Missouri; served as a corrections officer and instructor at the Western Missouri Correctional Center in Cameron, Missouri; worked as a construction instructor at North Central Missouri College; and owned and operated his own construction business.
Don was committed to his community. He volunteered as a coach for boys’ pee wee and little league baseball, assisted with Boy Scout Troop 99 and served as an elder at the First Christian Church in Trenton. He further demonstrated his dedication to public service serving nine years on the Trenton R-IX School Board and eight years as a Grundy County Commissioner. Don was also a proud member of the Trenton Coin Club and the Trenton Masonic Lodge.
Don found great joy in attending grandchildren’s sporting events and remained active with his many hobbies.
Don is survived by his wife, Karen; two sons, Craig Sager (Megan) of Trenton and Cary Sager (Misty) of Cleveland, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Bradyn Sager, Graeme Sager and Henry Sager. He is also survived by one brother, Fred Sager (Genene) of Princeton, Missouri; one sister, Becky Hall (Gary) of Trenton; and one brother-in-law, Richard Johnson of Trenton; Additionally, he leaves behind several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Dean Sager and Dennis Sager; three sister-in-laws, Pam Sager, Annette Sager, Brenda Johnson; and one nephew, Aaron Sager.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested toward a 529 education fund benefitting Don’s grandchildren. Checks may be made payable to Karen Sager and left with or mailed to the mortuary.
